Future Applications

Silicon wafers like the kind used in this research are used as the raw material for making computer chips. This work is important because it helps explain what happens during silicon growth and related processes central to microelectronics manufacturing and other industries. Reactions of this kind are important in a common growth process known as chemical vapor deposition. Atoms other than silicon can be used to grow industrial diamonds and coat engine parts with this process.
